Time Tested Wire Connection Technique to the Rescue
How do you make connections in densely packed equipment with terminals close together?

In today's environment, electronic equipment is being made smaller and smaller with terminals packed closer together making wire connections more difficult to accomplish. The challenge is met with a technique that has been perfected by the telecom industry and companies with electronic assembly lines using a method known as wire wrap.Illustration

This solderless connection by wire wrapping is now a standard method of making connections to terminals in high-density electronic equipment. A wire wrapped connection is made by coiling the wire around the sharp corners of a terminal under mechanical tension. Follow this simple 5-step procedure to perform a successful wire wrap (see illustration).

A distinct advantage of wire wrapping is the ease with which a wire may be removed from a terminal to correct errors or modify wiring. An unwrap tool is slipped over the terminal, engaging the first turn of the connection. Rotating the tool, the connection is removed in seconds, without damage to the terminal. Wire wrapping is now the preferred method for both fieldwork and the production line. In addition, you have the advantages of simplicity and speed to address this common problem.
